On the fourth day of Sona Devi University’s Freshers Week, Aagaz 3, Assistant Professor of the Sanskrit Department, Kumari Nikita, introduced newly enrolled students to the rich tradition of Ancient Indian Knowledge.
She explained that through this course, students will gain insight into the vast heritage of Indian knowledge, its historical origins, and its relevance in modern life. The course covers various aspects of the Indian knowledge tradition, such as:
- The Vedas, Upavedas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas, Upanishads
- Kalpa texts (including Shrautasutras, Grihyasutras, Dharmasutras, and Shulbasutras)
- Astronomy, Mathematics, Mahapuranas, Upapuranas, Vedangas
- Classical epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata
- Treatises on Economics (Arthashastra), Religious texts, Mahakavyas (epic poems), Lyric poetry, Drama, and various Indian knowledge systems
Kumari Nikita emphasized that the goal of this course is not just to study ancient elements of Indian knowledge, but also to reflect on how they can be applied in our modern lives. She shared that the primary objectives of the course are:
- To study and understand the history and development of Indian knowledge traditions
- To appreciate the uniqueness of Indian scriptures and texts
- To recognize the contributions of Indian science, mathematics, and medicine
She added that this course will not only help students understand Indian culture and history but will also expand their intellectual horizons, enabling them to better comprehend various aspects of life.
