Lecture Organized at Sona Devi University on World Mental Health Day 2025

A lecture was organized today at the Vivekananda Auditorium of Sona Devi University on the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2025. The global theme for this year is “Mental Health in Disasters and Emergencies: Access to Services”, highlighting the critical need for mental health services during times of crisis. Key aspects of this theme include establishing coordination mechanisms for psychosocial support, strengthening community systems, training responders in psychological first aid, and expanding mental health services particularly for vulnerable populations.

During the lecture, Registrar Prof. Dr. Gulab Singh Azad emphasized that due to various natural disasters, thousands of people across the country are being severely affected, making mental health an essential issue today. He stated that mental health is just as important as physical health. Dr. Azad pointed out the rapidly increasing cases of depression and anxiety, especially among the youth.

Introducing the topic, he discussed various mental disorders, their symptoms, and causes. He cited lack of awareness as a major reason behind poor mental health and noted that proper treatment can cure mental illnesses. Dr. Azad further explained that stigma, ignorance, and lack of resources are leading to rising mental health problems. Identifying symptoms and proper diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment.

Referring to the Bhagavad Gita, he emphasized the importance of control over the mind for maintaining good mental health. He elaborated on focus, tendencies, daily routine, and habits. Discussing Indian philosophy, he stated that the mind, consciousness, intellect, and ego form the foundation of personality. He suggested that self-suggestion and introspection are necessary to attain contentment in life.

Dr. Azad advised students to stay in regular contact with their teachers for guidance, to cultivate their hobbies, and noted that a certain level of stress is necessary for success. He encouraged students to remain optimistic, self-reliant, and to avoid excessive expectations from others.

Vice-Chancellor of Sona Devi University and certified clinical psychologist Dr. J.P. Mishra spoke on how we establish our lives and stressed the deep connection between mental and physical health. Discussing the dynamic aspects of the mind, he explained that all individuals are governed by id, ego, and superego. Talking about personality, he said adaptability is essential in life and that improving our mental health requires a shift in mindset. He emphasized the importance of maintaining balance in life and the need to be self-aware in this era of change. He concluded that right thinking is key to achieving success.

On this special occasion, Chancellor of Sona Devi University, Mr. Prabhakar Singh, said that mental health can be maintained by embracing Indian philosophy, civilization, and culture. Highlighting the global adoption of yoga for mental and physical well-being, he cited the example of people from Okinawa Island in Japan, who have maintained good health through a disciplined diet and physical labor. He stressed the importance of strengthening community life and staying connected with the environment. Mr. Singh also read out an inspiring message titled Cultural Warning: From America to India.

The event was attended by deans of various faculties, heads of departments, assistant professors, and students of the university.
